The highlight of this week was attending Maks, Val & Peta Confidential: Tour 2018 at the beautiful Orpheum theater. Confidential is the all-new dance tour featuring Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd, the stars of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. I got to see the Russian brothers’ first smash hit Our Way tour back in 2016 at the Ryman auditorium in Nashville, TN, and it was incredible! In their debut show, Maks and Val gave audience an insight into their background, their life path toward success and what drives them forward. This time around, Peta Mugatroyd has joined the show as a new addition to the family, and the dancers’ story continues.

But first, I treated myself to some mushroom flatbread (my favorite!) from The Majestic Grille, right across the street from the theater, and then headed on over to the meet-and-greet event before the show. At the check-in, all the VIPs got their gift bags with all the branded goodies in a cool tote bag, and then we were escorted into a meeting room as everyone was waiting with anticipation for the star dancers to show up. One thing I love about Maks and Val is how authentic they are in the way they express themselves on or off stage. They always stay true to themselves no matter where they are or who they are talking to. Finally, they came out, and everyone raised a champagne toast as Maks, Val and Peta welcomed the guests and shared their experiences of being in Memphis for the first time. Maks was proudly wearing The Peabody shirt, and Val was raving about really enjoying the city. Especially at the end of the show, Val mentioned how impressed he was with the work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located here in Memphis, and called it “the most beautiful place on earth.”

“I’ve never been anywhere more inspiring, more powerful, more magical than St. Jude.” – Val Chmerkovskiy

I’ve been watching Maks, Val and Peta on the hit show Dancing with the Stars for many years, and it’s amazing to see how far they have come as dancers and as people. One thing to notice is how strong the family bond is for this trio. Confidential is their way to celebrate dancing, family, love and life. It’s their most honest show yet, where they share lots of personal stories, their struggles and triumphs, and their definition of what true love is all about. I love how they’ve incorporated their real life and stories which most of us can relate to. In one part there was the “stroller dance” choreographed by Maks with a few other dancers, depicting the idea of being a first-time father and learning to juggle the baby duties… and doing it all with a lot of swag and hip rotations! I liked how the show has touched upon so many human emotions: there was laughter, sadness, joy, despair, struggle, and there was love. The message of the show is a universal one – of love, family, and the amazing chaos that comes with it.

As I was sitting in the audience, I felt I was part of the family too… just sitting on the couch, drinking some hot tea (it’s a Russian thing), and talking about life. I loved how the dancers incorporated different multimedia into the show: dancing, personal video clips, engaging graphics – all to tell their story without too many words but with pure emotion and movement. And, of course, a big part of the story was the relationship between Maks and Peta who make a great team not only as dance partners but now as marriage partners also. Their road to each other hasn’t been a smooth ride, but it’s the overcoming of the challenges together and their commitment to each other which helped create a solid foundation for their beautiful family.

Even though the show had many emotional and somewhat heavy moments, there was plenty of thrill, passion and simply great ballroom dancing! I hope there is another chapter to the story to come in the future as Maks, Val and Peta continue their life journey of dance, love, and family.

I was in the audience with some other students from UB. Wish I had been a VIP with U! Loved the show & dancing with a message which you have described superbly. Thanks for sharing. I have been a loyal fan of this show since seeing it for the first time & fortunate to see the LA production live. Hope they keep Memphis on their touring schedule!
