Waltz Ballroom Dance Style

Part of the thrill of getting to participate in the dance performance showcase events at Ultimate Ballroom dance studio is having an excuse to dress up in a dance costume. No matter what age you are, it’s so fun to get to play a character on a dance floor and express yourself through movement, emotions and your look! Just like a film actor, a dancer can become an embodiment of their character in a particular dance style through their costume – whether it is a fun and fringy Cha-Cha dress or an elegant gown typically worn for a Waltz.

Picking the right outfit can be quite a task. There are several factors to consider:

  • Dance Style. When a ballroom dancer walks out on a dance floor to showcase their routine, one can almost immediately determine what type of dance they are about to perform. For example, you’ll typically see a combination of black and red colors used for dancing Paso Doble and Tango. The beautiful Cinderella-like gowns are perfect for a Waltz or Foxtrot. When picking out a dress for a Rhythm dance, short and fitted dress with varying fringe or extension details is ideal for accentuating the movement and the speed of the dance.
  • Dance Complexity. When selecting the right outfit for your dance, it’s also good to think about your choreography and the complexity of the moves in your dance. Will the dress allow you to do that spin or dip without having a wardrobe malfunction or making your feel uncomfortable while performing it? The last thing you want to do is worry about the costume in the middle of a dance routine.
  • Dance Music. A dance is a story, especially when it’s performed to a song which conveys a certain meaning. Sometimes the perfect outfit may be something totally unique and unexpected if it reflects the lyrics in a music as opposed to wearing a traditional dress for that particular dance.

No matter what you choose, you want to feel confident and comfortable in your dance outfit, so that you can concentrate on your technique, expression and feel great being in the spotlight. Once your decide on the type of the outfit you are going for, there are many dance resources to help your find the right costume for your dance. And, don’t forget the accessories! The shoes, the makeup, the perfect flower, or a sparkly comb for your hair. For the performance showcases, the Ultimate Ballroom staff often brings in amazing hair and makeup artists to give you the opportunity to put finishing touches on your look, so that you are ready and glamorous for your upcoming performance.
